The Union Street Theatre is a venue for performing arts and special events. Part of the historic Masonic Temple has been renovated to host a black box theatre, which intends to spark a cultural transformation in Danville, VA. The Union Street Theatre was founded on the idea that arts can unite our community and inspire our youth. We aspire to broaden the scope of our audience by introducing new works, bringing non-traditional elements to classic plays and musicals, and by providing a diverse menu of creative adventures. Our first season consisted of Willy Wonka, Camp Rock, Smokey Joe’s Cafe, Theatre of Insanity, Best of Broadway, a production of Cinderella with 3 casts of children, From These Pages: A Celebration of the Written Word, and an original adaptation of Sleeping Beauty. We plan to announce our second season in the coming weeks and we look forward to the continuation of our successful youth leadership program. We were honored to receive an award from the Danville Historical Society for “Dedicated Commitment & Service to the Cause of Historic and Cultural Preservation and Development” in our first season, and that commitment and service will always be at the heart of our mission.
STAGE WEST COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE
Stage West is located in Spring Hill, FL. It is an all volunteer organization that was begun 31 years ago by a handful of people who loved live theater. Their dedication to the arts provided the means to bring live theater to our small county. In 1993, the theater that you see in the picture was built from donations, ticket sales and a lot of hard work. It now houses two auditoriums and produces 11 shows a year. We recently wrapped up performing The Music Man, just held auditions for Annie, Jr. and will be performing three MTI show next season. They are Sweeney Todd, A Little Night Music and the Producers.
A brave decision was taken by the Youth Office to change the use of the building from a generic youth club to a dedicated Youth Arts Centre and it was my privilege to take the helm for what has been the exhausting, death defying, humiliating, exhilarating, brilliant and most exciting ride of my life. the wonderful spaces have been given over to the young creative people of the island once again, allowing them space to sing, dance, act, create theatre, music, art, dances, shows and much more, it has a vibrant energy due to the never ending supply of imagination and creativity that flow daily through its doors. During the course of this year the venerable 150 year old building on Kensington Road has gone full circle from being the island's Art School which encouraged the young artistic people of the island to find new and innovative ways to present their creativity using the best of skills and technology available to them at the time to a performing Arts Centre that encourages the young artistic people of the island to find new and innovative ways to present their creativity using the best of skills and technology available to them at the time. See what I mean? Now open six days a week from 2pm - 10 pm, the club now has 25 arts related sessions, with visual and digital arts, graffiti and stencils, musical theatre dance, hiphop, stomp, ballroom, drama, singing, rapping, harp, rock music, indie music, sound and lights, set design and building, and so much more, it is the most exciting place to be on the island at any time of the week. The primary goal of CharACTers is to promote cultural curiosity. We want our performances to make a connection to the mind, heart and spirit of our audiences; creating and stimulating a hunger for the experiences only achieved through the arts. As a theatre group in the community, CharACTers largely depends on the commitment and dedication of its many volunteers who donate their time and talent on stage and behind the scenes, from actors and stage crew to box office attendants and family members. This blend of actors, staff and community volunteers allows CharACTers to achieve its goal of providing enjoyable entertainment. Each production consist of all volunteers, a combination of young and old, first time actors and very skilled and seasoned actors. You can be sure that any involvement will produce great pride in the end result. We encourage all volunteers. If you have an interest we will find a way for you to participate. As you may be aware, theatre can be beneficial for the youth of our community and their families in many ways: by developing their self confidence and imaginations, teaching them the techniques of drama and dance, motivating them to learn about their community and become more involved citizens. We have worked with organizations, such a Big Brothers/Big Sisters, many times to provide their patrons with such opportunities. Through your contribution to CharACTers, Inc., you are also able to invest in our children’s futures. CharACTers, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) Non-Profit Public Foundation. We are both State and Federally recognized as a non-profit organization!
