Tags: The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York, Hell's Kitchen
At the risk of falling into the trap of thinking New York is the centre of the universe (which, for those native New Yorkers out there, it isn't by the way) here's an article in the Wall Street Journal (yes, I didn't realize they were still going either...) which looks at plans to open two new theaters inside luxury rental/condo space in Hell's Kitchen. Made possible by the ongoing efforts of the Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York, the spaces will be rented out to small theatre companies at subsidized rates. Which is great news for those outfits that champion new work, and generally help keep theatre alive and fresh.
It's comforting to know in a city that is forever finding new ways to raise rent and squeeze out the last vestiges of 'normal' living someone is championing the cause of theatre companies who otherwise would melt away like fudge swirl ice cream on a summers day....
