The soul of the blues wails out full and strong in Blues In The Night a scorching, TONY-nominated musical! The twenty-six hot and torchy numbers that tell of the sweet, sexy and sorrowful experiences three women have with the lying, cheating snake of a man who does them wrong will leave you energized, inspired, and ready to wail.

With little spoken text, the interweaving stories are defined through glorious songs which cover the range of this indigenous American art form, from Bessie Smith to Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, Alberta Hunter, Jimmy Cox, Ida Cox and more, telling of the pain and misery of life and love and also of the dogged determination to get through it all that is the essence of the blues.

Alternately wistful, tender and raunchy, Blues In The Night is a modest production with a larger-than-life score and vocal arrangements designed to bring down the house.

Tony nomination for Best Musical, 1982-83 season

Insight from the experts Casting Tip: Predominantly women

Staging Tip:Unit set. Written to take place in three apartments with an overhead catwalk, but can be as simple as three distinct spaces, with The Man walking among them. Consider serving drinks or food during the show in a cabaret setting. (Be sure to obtain the proper licenses first, though!) The Blues are about organic delivery -- it should be spontaneous and soul-stirring. Give your performers plenty of time to rehearse and room to explore. Keep in mind that each person is a character, and the songs play off those characters.
