Hello MTI ShowSpacers!
I'm starting a running list of theatre terms. What are some of your favorite musical theatre sayings? I'd love to hear the classic quotes you use E.G. "The Show Must Go On" and "There's No Business Like Show Business" as well as any personal sayings you have developed in your own productions.
Best wishes,
Allison Ravenscroft
"I feel you, Johanna." (Used as a substitute for "I completely understand.")
One of my friends and I have this thing where whenever we see each other right after a really painful or frustrating experience, we say, "A bottle of vodka and a straw." (Mary says that early on in Merrily We Roll Along.) George Furth is my favorite Sondheim bookwriter just for lines like that one.
Lately, I've been misquoting Sondheim:
"Look - I made an omlette, where there never was an omlette."
I say, "none whatsoever, Coalhouse" maybe nine times a day. But you have to say it all sassy like Sarah's Friend.
"Sit down, you're rockin' the boat!" It amuses me to say this, sometimes for no reason. Too bad I have never said this while on a boat...
"Liaisons...what's happened to them?" (from A Little Night Music)-- Perfect for when you realize you don't have enough connections in an industry built on connections. Hee Hee :)
I tell my middle and high schoolers almost daily ( I teach chorus) to "Sing out, Louise!" (from Gypsy) I always ge a puzzled look, but I giggle to myself - One day, they may get it!
I love the expression, "I don't pop my cork for every guy I see!" but I just can't seem to work that into a conversation very often.
There is a line I use in my new musical "Big Feet, Big Love" that I've heard used on video sets for ages: "Back light in the back!" It means, "We know what to do--let's get on with it!"
I'm also fond of telling technical theater people, "Break a leg--no! Break an actor's leg."
guys have you heard this saying? "when you can shake a leg you can shake a bed" i heard it once in a theatre
Probably a quote from The Wizard of Oz... "Well, some people without brains do an awful lot of talking."
