Whether you're a fan of J.J.Abrams' work or not it's hard to deny his presence and influence in the film and television industry over the last 10 years. 'Lost' became more or less inescapable last year despite the series finale being somewhat blah.
Normally working in the sci-fi/spy genre (his take on 'Star Trek' last year was refreshing), Abrams is now on the short list to direct Universal's film version of 'Wicked'. Talks have already begun, and it's unclear what the director's interest is at this stage.
Also on the list are other directors who have more experience dealing with film versions of musicals, but in my mind Abrams would be an interesting choice because of the heightened sense of mystery he brings to the screen. And if it's a flop at least the authors can rest assured the stage version will be running for a couple more months yet....

I'm not a big enough movie fan to know that many directors. I just know Abrams' work after falling in love with Alias/Jennifer Garner. Tim Burton might do an interestingly dark twist on the tale...

Rodney Robbins:
Abrams rocks. I think he'll do a fine job. A book isn't a play, a play isn't a musical, a musical isn't a movie and a movie isn't a musical on film. It WILL be different because it HAS to be. If you could choose, who else would you suggest?
